Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool

A visionary, innovator and originator who defied categorization and embodied the word cool: a foray into the life and career of musical and cultural icon Miles Davis.

Using words from Miles Davis’ autobiography, this film offers an incisive insight into our understanding of the legendary musician. Newly released archival material, alongside interviews with pre-eminent historians and personal friends like Quincy Jones, illustrate a man of intensity and devotion to his craft. Despite the indignities of America during the time of segregation, nothing was going to stop Davis from realising his dream: to create a new form of musical expression. Davis worked like a physicist with his collaborators to push musical experimentation and widen the tones and lyricism of jazz – the effects of which are felt to this day.

As the film delves into his past loves, personal relationships, and addictions, a clearer portrait of Davis the man emerges. Davis is fearless and engaging throughout, and his intellectual fervor is only tempered by his insecurities. Director Stanley Nelson’s epic biopic collects the strands of a creative life and weaves them together for us to understand one of the great modern American artists like never before.

Theatrical rights are available for Miles Davis – The Birth of the Cool from the 1st of August 2019 to the 31st of October 2019 for cinemas across Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Ella: Just One of Those Things

Ella Fitzgerald was a 15 year-old street kid when she won a talent contest in 1934 at the Apollo Theatre in Harlem. Within months she was a star. “Ella: Just One of Those Things” follows her extraordinary journey over six decades as her sublime voice transforms the tragedies of her own life and the troubles of her times into joy.

The film uses never-before-seen images and unheard interviews to bring Ella Fitzgerald to life and to tell the story of her music. – a black woman who makes her career in the face of horrifying racism.

Here is an Ella the world never knew – tough, thoughtful, funny, a dazzling musical innovator. The film also uncovers Ella’s commitment to the battle for Civil Rights; and it explores the conflicts that always haunted this intensely private woman: the struggle to reconcile her hunger for adoring audiences with her longing for a domestic life with her husband and son. At a time when she was the biggest singing star in the world, her pianist and friend Oscar Peterson said Ella was “the loneliest woman in the world”. But as Jamie Cullum says “her music is one of the reasons it’s worth being on this planet”.

Featuring interviews with: Tony Bennett, Jamie Cullum, Laura Mvula, Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Cleo Laine, Andre Previn, Norma Miller, Patti Austin, Izsak Perlman, Margo Jefferson, Will Friedwald and a rare interview with Ella’s son, Ray Brown Jr.

Theatrical rights are available for Ella Fitzgerald – Just One of Those Things from the 1st of June 2019 to the 1st of June 2020 for cinemas across Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Salvador Dalí – In Search of Immortality

The documentary proposes an exhaustive journey through the life and work of Salvador Dal , and also of Gala, his muse and collaborator. It starts in 1929, a crucial year in Dalí’s career and life, as he joined the surrealist group and met Gala, and advances until the year of the artist’s death in 23 January 1989.

In all this vital and artistic journey, Dalí’s favorite places, especially Portlligat, stand out as the only stable home-workshops he possesses; Figueres, his hometown, where he creates his Dalí Theater-Museum, and Púbol, where the Castle is, exponent of courtly love, which Dalí gives to Gala. But naturally other cities, especially Paris and New York are also central.

It is worth noting the numerous documentary contributions that help us get closer to this unique painter of art history, who already has a place among great masters. Contemplating Salvador Dalí himself, Gala, a tour of his creations, approaching and distancing from his family, all through images and documents, some of them unpublished, brings us closer to a painter who has managed to create a character that is a work of art itself. With this documentary we can go beyond the character and approach the painter and the man, and the spaces conceived by him that have helped to shape his immortality, the immortality of a genius.

Water Lilies by Monet – The Magic of Water and Light

Water Lilies by Monet – the Magic of Water and Light tells the story of the origin of a massive work of art that broke with convention, of an artist resurrecting his life only thanks to painting. His human endeavor defied both space and conventions in his timeless masterpieces.

In a war-torn country, the undisputed genius of French Art disrupted the art world and changes it forever. As the end of the First World War drew near it became clear to Monet that his work of art could not but be his final legacyto France: a symbol of peace, hope, and resistance, in a battered and bloody world.

This is the tale of an obsession with light and water the painter could not escape from and how he transformed it into a kind of magic. A tale of the radical elements that revolutionized Modern Art: Monet’s clear intentwas to transfer onto canvas the “first, pure impression” of forms and objects as they appear to the eye that has never seen them before.

And this documentary will show the Water Lilies by Claude Monet, as they have never been seen before. A unique, exclusive look at the masterpieces housed at the Orangerie Museum, the Marmottan Museum, the Orsay Museum and Giverny, forthe firsttime ever on the big screen for an unrepeatable experience.

Inspired by the international bestseller Mad Enchantment: Claude Monet and the Painting of the Water Lilies (2016) written byRoss King, also featured in the film.

Klimt & Schiele – Eros and Psyche

Erotic works of art are sacred too! Egon Schiele, letter to his uncle Leopold Czihaczek, 1911. 1 918. Only a few months earlier, the main hall of the Secession building had welcomed his works: 19 oil paintings and 29 drawings. His first successful exhibition, a celebration of a new painting idea that portrays the restlessness and desires of mankind. A few months earlier, his teacher and friend Gustav Klimt had died. From the turn of the century, he had fundamentally changed the feeling of art and founded a new group: the Secession.

ART BEATS SERIES – Caravaggio – The Soul and the Blood

After groundbreaking success in terms of audiences and critics of “The Vatican Museums” and “Florence and the Uffizi Gallery”, and after the release of “Raphael – The Lord of the Arts”, here it comes a new documentary dedicated to an Italian Master: Caravaggio – Soul and blood.

A journey through life, works and struggles of Michelangelo Merisi from Caravaggio. His existence, no less than his art, is characterized by lights and shadows, contrasts and contradictions, genius and sobriety. Revolutionary artist, he was often not so beloved by contemporaries. He travelled Italy in search of luck or perhaps in search of himself, escaping the enemies that he always found at his passage. Milan, Venice, Rome, Naples, Malta, Sicily. His death seems a twist of faith: he died in Porto Ercole, one step away from Rome, one step away from salvation.

According to the Longhi’s lesson (the main Caravaggio expert), his work will be read with strict reference to his existence, finding in his masterpieces the echo of personal experiences.

The narrative unfolds on two levels:

The artistic digression, in which the commentary of the main artworks will be entrusted to an illustrious art historian from the first painting: Bacchus and Boy with a Basket of Fruit. Through the roman period artworks: Cardsharps, Judith Beheading Holofernes to the last works as David with the Head of Goliath.

“Photographic” scenes that, accompanied by the voice of Caravaggio himself, evokes an object or a situation symbolizing his life and his works. A basket of fruit, a musical instrument, a sword, a grate of a cell etc. These emotional and evocative moments – thanks to the use of light and cinematic techniques such timelapse and slowmotion – help the viewer to go deep inside the mind and soul of Caravaggio, empathizing with his impulses and fears.

Available from April 2018, till November 28th 2019, Pannonia Entertainment distributes this unique art documentary to cinemas across Hungary, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Romania.
